In case there is anyone out there that hasn’t heard about it, Germany has a law forbidding homeschooling. They say that if people keep their children out of state approved schools, they may think and believe differently than their culture does. And they do enforce this law.
Recently a family in Germany had their children forcibly removed from their home by what amounted to a 20 member swat team. What was their crime? Homeschooling. The children were kept separated from each other as well as their parents for several weeks. The parents finally gave up and agreed to send them to a government approved school. They are in the process of getting the children back, we hope.
Another family, the Romeikes, chose to flee Germany to the U.S. to escape this persecution. They applied for asylum due to religious persecution, and were denied.
Just why is homeschooling one’s own children such a crime, and how does our present government feel about it all?
The Obama administration has filed another brief against the Romeikes, a German homeschooling family seeking asylum in the U.S.
The brief argues that Germany’s laws forbidding homeschooling actually promote tolerance. The U.S. Justice Department defends Germany’s opposition to religious “parallel societies.”
The government’s pleading read, “The goal in Germany is for an ‘open, pluralistic society.'”
pluralism: 4 a : a state of society in which members of diverse ethnic, racial, religious, or social groups maintain and develop their traditional culture or special interest within the confines of a common civilization
b : a concept, doctrine, or policy advocating this state
Karla McKanders, an asylum and refugee law specialist at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, told ABC News the family faces an uphill battle.
“They are trying to establish that they are eligible for asylum under the social group category, which is a difficult group to prove in the first place,” McKanders said.
McKanders also says that public policy implications as far as the United States’ relationship with Germany could also be in play in this case, and that immigration officials may be wary of setting a precedent that establishes homeschooling as a means for asylum.
“They don’t want to open up the floodgates for similar asylum claims based on these grounds,” she said.

I hear you out there, “Wow, that is bad. Sure glad it’s half a world away and nowhere near me!” Well, buckle your seat belt, Bubba!
The United States of America Education Department has been working on standardizing American children’s’ education. They want everyone across the board to get the same level of education, no matter what the economic or cultural differences are.
Our son is now 26 years old, so I have not been as keen on the educational situation as I used to be. It came as a literal and total shock when I read this:
What in the world is “the Common Core” you may ask. (If you did, believe me, you are not alone. I know that I had no idea what it was!) Well, here ya’ go: 45 states and the District of Columbia are for the first time using Common Core State Standards Initiative in trying to standardize the curricula for grades K-12 throughout the country. One man, Robert Small, attended a question-and-answer forum held by the Maryland State Department of Education in Baltimore recently. Mr. Small was actually jerked into the aisle by a security officer, taken out (roughly I might add), handcuffed and arrested! FOR DISAGREEING WITH HIS SCHOOL BOARD ABOUT USING COMMON CORE! (See video here)
To me it looks like our government is attempting to be like Great Britain in regards to gun control (There are very few people allowed to have shotguns in England; the police literally went door-to-door taking all other guns from the good people of England, and crime went up 600%. Yeah, the people hate it!), and like Germany as far as wanting a “Pluralistic society”: Everyone thinking like the government wants them to think, no divisive beliefs, no divisions.
And from where I sit, it looks like they are well on their way to getting it. Whether we like it or not.
